FIFA expands World Cup to 48 teams

FIFA has announced it will expand the World Cup to 48 teams starting from the 2026 event to be held in North America.

An extra 16 nations have been added with 16 three-team groups with the top two advancing to the round of 32.

The move makes it easier for the Socceroos to qualify however it dilutes the competition between nations.

Tuesday’s decision will create more funds with a potential extra one billion dollars that could be demanded for television rights.

FIFA insists the next two World Cup’s will stay 32-team events.
