Jargon Buster: The Outside Broadcast - or - the O.B.

An Outside Broadcast (or an O.B.) is by definition: a remote transmission by a radio station from a location, allowing the business to showcase its products, team and facilities to the listening audience - while interacting with customers drawn in to the broadcast at the business location.

But what does that mean?

It means we pack up our studio and hot-foot it to your business on a specific day and for 4 hours of broadcast live from there, but before that happens, there is so much more value we bring to you.

1. We pre-promote your event - we start running promo's usually at least 3 days out from the event, giving the times, the location and the reasons why listeners should pop down and see us live at your location. Even listing some of the giveaways or offers we will be promoting on the day. This is done in a promo spot (similar to a commercial) which runs at all hours of the day and night.

2. We turn up at least an hour before to set up our visual branding so people know where we are. Including flags, banners, our crazy wavy inflatable arm guy (which we really should name him - any ideas?). Then we put up our broadcast kit, which can include marque, tables, chairs, sofas, microphones, mixing desk and more - plus any games or things we will be talking about.

3. Back at the studio, our producer is getting ready, and testing the lines to your business to make sure we get THE best possible sound for our staff, and the people who we will be talking too - so yes, you will get an opportunity to talk live on-air about your products and services.

4. Some business people choose to make their O.B's a HUGE event, giving away big prizes, having lots of competitions, and even industry spokespeople available to talk about their products on sale through your business - it's an opportunity to educate listeners in a longer form than a 30 second commercial - so grab it with both hands and enjoy the ride.

5. We then start our broadcast, we are crossing live to our staff at your business, talking about your location, where you are, what you have and what to expect during the 4 hour broadcast, and most importantly, why we are there. Listeners LOVE outside broadcasts and we always get a crowd attending them. AND even people who drive past your location, and are not listening to us will also see something big happening, and they will come on in too!

6. During our broadcast we will talk about your business, products and services, grab people for interviews on-air and also talk to customers who have come in - play some games with them and also point them in your direction for product or service demonstrations. We do some giveaways, and generally have quite a lot of fun along the way. AND some business owners are very clever, they also book face painters, petting zoos and bouncy castles at these events to keep the kids busy while the parents shop and look around. We also share photos on social media and generally hype up the crowds too!

7. At the end of the event, we pack everything up, sadly say goodbye and head back to our studios.

You can't beat an outside broadcast for value for money either because we mention your business name so many times on-air in our time leading up to and while on-air, plus what's going to happen and why listeners should pop down and see us while we are at your location.

At a conservative guess, your business name is said at least 20+ times in the promo spot as it plays leading up to the event, plus 20+ times by other people promoting it before the event happens in the days before and the day of the event. Then there's at least 16+ times while at the event.... that's a grand total of roughly 56+ times your business name and the event are mentioned (remember there are also radio commercial spots that you get bonused before and after the event too - which means your commercial can mention the event in the lead up to it if you want) which brings the rough estimate up to over 100+ times - and that's a low, low, conservative number - it is usually much, much more than that.

Essentially... you own our radio station for 4 hours on the day, and people will know your name, know where you are, and what it is you sell or provide.

And THAT's why an Outside Broadcast is great value for you and your customers.
