She was fondly known as the nation's sweetheart of the 80s.
It's a sad day for the Australian TV and film industry at the news of the passing of Aussie actress and Logie winner, Penny Cook, aged 61.
A statement from Cook's management company, reflecting the families grief, was issued, saying, "It is with great sorrow that her family wish to advise that the much loved Penny Cook, beloved partner, mother, daughter, sister, and dear friend, died peacefully last night, of cancer, surrounded by family."
Best known for her role as the fiercely independent Vicki the vet on A Country Practice in the 80s, Cook fast became a favourite character in many Australian lounge rooms.
Ms Cook also starred on E-Street, Young and the Restless and The Flying Doctors and was a presenter on The Great Outdoors.
The family has requested donations be made to the Sydney-based Monkey Baa Theatre Company for Young People, where she was chair of the board and the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse in lieu of flowers or gifts.
A private cremation will be held for the actor, with a celebration of her life to be announced at a later date.
