Celebrities raised more than $14USD million during Tuesday's one hour special; Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief.
The one-hour commercial-free special featured opening remarks from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, as well as a performance of Lean On Me by Stevie Wonder and Stand By You by Usher and Blake Shelton. Brad Paisley, Demi Lovato, Darius Rucker and CeCe Winans also performed the Beatles’ With a Little Help from My Friends from Nashville. Despacito star Luis Fonsi teamed up Tori Kelly for Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, and George Strait performed Texas with Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton.
Actors and singers spoke to callers to take donations with big names including Oprah Winfrey, Cher, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Josh Gad, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Matthew McConaughey, Justin Timberlake, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Hilary Duff, The Rock and Billy Crystal, with Justin Bieber leading everyone in a prayer.
The death toll of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma stands at approximately 85 so far in Florida and Texas, according to the New York Times.
During the telethon, Stephen Colbert announced that Apple was donating $5 million, Jimmy Fallon also noted that Albertsons Cos. and Merck each gave $1 million, and Houston Rockets star Chris Paul said that the NBA Players Association not only donated $500,000, but would match any professional basketball player’s donation up to $20,000.
So far, over $44 million has been raised for the Hurricane Relief (about $55million AUD).
