The funnyman who helped shape comedy has died

Comedian Jerry Lewis has died aged 91

Jerry Lewis, the legendary comedian and filmmaker who was adored by millions, has died aged 91.

A spokesperson from the family released this statement:

"Famed comedian, actor and legendary entertainer Jerry Lewis passed away peacefully today of natural causes at 91 at his home in Las Vegas with his family by his side."

Lewis first shot to fame in 1956 with his comedy duo act Martin and Lewis with the suave Dean Martin. When that came to an end in the mid 1950's, Lewis carved out a niche for himself as a slapstick comedian starring in movies such as The Nutty Professor, The Bell Boy and The Patsy

His finely honed craft of comedy made him a household name for decades.

Lewis was a major defining figure of American entertainment, inspiring many great comedians including Jim Carey who said in a heartfelt statement to Twitter, "That fool was no dummy. Jerry Lewis was an undeniable genius an unfathomable blessing, comedy's absolute! I am because he was!"

Lewis had a full life, was married three times and has seven children.
