The MTV Video Music Awards Winners & Highlights

The Foo Fighters were honoured on the night.

The MTV Video Music Awards returned live and in person on Monday 13th of September in New York at the Barclay's Centre - hosted by Doja Cat – who had some very interesting costume changes, including one where she wore a chair on her head!

One of the biggest surprises of the night was Madonna's opening appearance, wearing a rather controversial and 'cheeky' leather bodysuit.

First-time nominee Oliva Rodrigo was nominated for five awards, winning three, including Best New Artist, Best Push Performance, & Song of the Year for her #1 track Driver’s License. The 18-year-old also performed her new single Good 4 U.

Video of the Year went to Lil Nas X – for his single Montero. Group of the year went to Korean Pop sensation BTS, Best R&B was won by Bruno Mars and Travis Scott’s project Silk Sonic and Best rock song went to John Mayer, for Last Train Home.

Justin Bieber went in with the most nominations, with 7, and took out two moon people. One was for Best Pop Song, and he won the big one, Artist of the Year.

The Biebs also performed with The Kid Laroi.

Here are all the acceptance speeches from the evening.

The Foo Fighters were also honoured with the Global Icon Award, and performed a medley of their greatest hits including Shame Shame, Everlong and Learn to Fly.

And Alicia Keys ft. Swae Lee gave a special performance of Empire State of Mind to commemorate 20 years since the 911 tragedy.
