Heritage listed Jarrahdale site to be restored

Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan today announced the Government had lifted leverage conditions on a grant towards the restoration of the historic National Trust-owned Mill Manager’s House in Jarrahdale.

The McGowan Government has committed just under $400,000 for conservation and upgrade works on the state heritage-listed Mill Manager's House in Jarrahdale.

The House was built circa 1889 to house the Mill Manager, and to meet the demands and growth of the new mill which became highly successful. It was one of two houses with the other house, located further up the valley, no longer standing.

Under the current grant agreement, the National Trust is required to secure a tenant and significant leverage funding before State funding can be released to start restoration work.

Relaxing this condition will enable important building works to commence while expressions of interest are sought for a lessee.

Ms MacTiernan also announced the Government would provide an additional $50,000 to assist with building fit out and initial operating costs for a new tenant.

“The McGowan Government has acted sensibly in lifting the leverage conditions on the $215,000 grant towards restoration works on the Mill Manager’s House, within the Jarrahdale Heritage Park," she said.

“We see this project as a great catalyst for economic growth and heritage tourism in Jarrahdale."

National Trust architects have developed a scope of works with a total project cost estimate of $395,155. The National Trust and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale are also contributing to the project.

“The House, which has been standing for about 120 years, has significant heritage value but is rundown and urgently needs upgrading and conserving," Ms MacTiernan said.

The Minister said she was glad to see the issue with funding resolved.

“We have resolved a situation that has dragged on for more than a year, and now look forward to seeing the House restored and available for use by the community."

“We have also recognised the building will need a suitable tenant so to help kickstart the process, the Government is providing an additional $50,000 to help with fit out and initial operating costs.

“The planned conservation works will ensure the Mill Manager’s House becomes a valued heritage and tourist attraction in the Peel region.”

Restoration work will start soon and should be completed by January next year.
