Rockingham-Mandurah faced a tough first day in their two day clash with University at Lark Hill on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first.
Mariner Leon Coombes managed to get an early break, taking University's Chris Sabburg for a duck.
University's batsman proved too good after losing their first wicket though scoring 1-102 off 20 overs, hitting a whopping 21 boundaries.
University's captain Matthew Birrell batted well finishing on 115 off 172 deliveries.
Rockingham-Mandurah's spinners then came into the game slowing down the visitor's score.
Craig Simmons scored 4-58 and was supported by Leon Coombs (2-56) and Ryan Done (2-65).
University declared at 9-271 with 5 overs remaining in the day leaving Tyler Robertson and Brandon Jacobs set at 0-2 at stumps.
"Ours boys are really looking forward to the challenge this weekend," Mariners coach Kris Kennedy said.
"There’s going to be a big emphasis on getting through the new ball and batting in partnerships for long periods of time.
"University’s bowling line up are generally heavily reliant on spin, so it will be up to our boys to be confident in their plans and staying present to execute well throughout the day.
"If we can bat out our overs, we‘ll give ourselves every opportunity to take home the win and the 10 points."
