Matt Wearn will only need to finish Sunday's men's laser sailing event to claim a goal medal.
He has a 22-point lead and will only need to finish the race or not get disqualified to be on the top place on the podium.
Wearn will become the third Australia to win goal in this event.
Thursday - West Aussie sailor Matt Wearn is perfectly placed for a gold medal just two days away from the pivotal race.
Wearn won both heats in the waters of Fujisawa, snatching the overall lead from closest rival Pavlos Kontides.
The 25-year-old is on 29 points, leading Kontides (44) and Norwegian Hermann Tomasgaard (49).
There are a further two Laser heats in Enoshima on Friday before Saturday’s all-important medal race, which will be worth double points.
