After a year-long delay, Peel Health Campus is on track to transition from private to public in the coming months.

Ramsay Health Care will hand the keys back to the State Government in August after managing the hospital since 2013.

The transition was first announced by the McGowan Government back in November 2020 and was scheduled to take place in August 2022, but this was delayed for 12 months due to ICT and other challenges.

Speaking to West Coast Radio, Mandurah MP David Templeman said although the process has been lengthy, a change of hands is no easy feat.

"Government hospitals have very high standards in terms of requirements, whether it be technical and operational, so those took a little bit longer than we expected but finally we're going to have our own publicly-owned hospital in Mandurah," he said.

Planning is also underway on a $152 million redevelopment of the hospital with works expected to begin before the end of the year.

This will include more than 60 additional inpatient beds an additional operating theatre and the introduction of a new Mental Health Emergency Centre.

It will also deliver 12 chemotherapy places, more outpatient services, and a new build of medical imaging services, along with a reconfiguration of the emergency department and expansion of the day procedure unit.

Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday said she is excited to see Peel Health Campus come back into public hands.

"Having this major upgrade is very important for our growing region, but also for our hardworking medical staff and admin people," she said/

"As a paramedic who worked in this area for nearly 20 years, I absolutely understand the importance of the additional Mental Health Emergency Centre to give space to the very busy emergency department."

Negotiations between Ramsay Health Care and the State are also underway on a proposal for a new private hospital to be built next to Peel Health Campus.
