A new project aimed at improving literacy among young children is being launched in the Peel region.
The ‘1000 Books before Kindy’ initiative is in conjunction with the Anglicare WA Child and Parent Centre in Dudley Park, with the help of with Mayor Rhys Williams and Mandurah MLA David Templeman.
It has been developed to help families improve the literacy, brain development and creative imagination of young children before starting school.
Anglicare WA Regional Manager Metro Vik Jeyakumar said it’s never too early to start reading to kids.
“Reading with your child has such a positive impact as it teaches your child about language and emotions, and strengthens your relationship,” Mr Jeyakumar said.
“This new initiative encouraging parents to read 1000 books before kindy to your child, will prepare them for a lifetime of learning and a love of reading.”
Dudley Park Centre Manager Justine Hansen is encouraging everyone to get involved.
“All families are welcome to participate in the program and each child’s name will be recorded in a log book and put on the 1000 Books Reading tree at the Child and Parent Centre," Mrs Hansen said.
“While 1000 books sounds like a lot, it’s as simple as reading one book a day with your child.”
