The Strike Force Vulcan have reunited in time for bushfire season
A new task force has been introduced to help combat arson during this bushfire season.
Police Minister Michelle Roberts is urging the community to get behind efforts of The Strike Force Vulcan to stamp out the risk of fires, by reporting potential firebugs to police.
The announcement kicks off with the start of summer and follows a weekend of suspected deliberately lit fires, including one in Port Kennedy, which left two hectares of burnt land.
Police in this force will be tasked with monitoring known fire starters, patrol arson hot spots and provide a rapid investigation response to any suspicious fires across the metro area.
Up to $50,000 will be on offer for anyone with information about suspected fire starters.
The taskforce will operate seven days a week during bushfire season.
Officers will also patrol arson hotspots and use a range of surveillance tactics to protect families and homes.
From the 446 deliberately lit or suspicious bushfires last season investigators were able to charge 10 arsonists.
A total 41 juveniles were also issued with cautions and attended fire awareness programs.
