The City of Mandurah has broadened its employment development program to help build capacity and employment opportunities.

The City’s extensive trainee and apprenticeship program has grown this year to 21 developmental positions.

There are three cadets, 11 apprentices and seven trainee positions in place which includes four trainee positions set aside for Indigenous recruitment.

Three trainees are still working at the City either on a temporary contract or casual basis following the completion of the 2015-2017 Indigenous Traineeship Program

The latest Indigenous Traineeship Program (2017-2019) is made up of five traineeship positions working in the Youth Development, CityParks, Recreation Centres, Community Development and Works and Services areas.

The trainees are undertaking either Certificate III or IV in various qualifications related to their field.

This year, the Indigenous trainees are again supported by a mentor program provided by an external agency which contributed to the previous program’s success.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Newman said the City of Mandurah was one of the region’s largest employers and took pride in its diverse organisational culture.

“The City currently employs 632 staff, many of them part-time and casual, in many varied fields from all corners of Mandurah and surrounding areas,” he said.

“Diversity and inclusion is very important to the City and that is why mature age and Indigenous apprentice and trainee positions are included, and valued, in our organisation.”

The employment development program is one of the many programs and activities offered by the City to build the skills and capacity of local people.

Recruitment for apprentices and trainees will start in October.
