The City of Rockingham has joined forces with local police again to make it tougher on crooks in the region over the busy summer holiday period.
People around the Rockingham and Mandurah areas are being prompted to keep sharp with safety measures this holiday period, with a few simple steps to make crooks lives tougher.
Police stations servicing the City of Rockingham, Kwinana and Mandurah areas will form part of a join initiative with the City of Rockingham for the “Making it Tougher on Crooks -- Community Safety Starts with You” campaign.
The WA Police Community Engagement Division is also playing a pivotal role.
Councillor Barry Sammels wants community members to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to police during the four-month crime fighting initiative, from December through to the end of March.
“The summer holiday period poses greater risks for home owners and business, as well for the safety of individuals, so it’s a time when we must all work together to make things tougher on crooks,” Cr Sammels said.
“The Australian Institute of Criminology has proved that campaigns involving police and local communities are effective in making life hard for criminals, but it is up to all of us to play a part."
Cr Sammels said most of the measures the community needs to take require simple common sense and linking up with local Police will ensure any offences will be dealt with in a timely matter.
There are some simple ways to make life tougher for crooks:
• Remove valuable items from parked cars
• Keep doors and windows locked and garage doors closed, even when at home
• Do not leave phones or bags unattended in public places
• Be wary of anybody who tries to distract you
• Report suspicious people or activities to police as a matter of urgency
• Keep a lookout for neighbours and friends
• Get to know your neighbours better
