The community have expressed their shock, anger and disappointment after a wooden giant was destroyed by fire in Coodanup at the weekend.

Vivi Cirkelstone was one of five sculptures placed throughout the Peel region as part of the Giants of Mandurah exhibition which only launched last month.

Around 11.30pm on Friday night emergency services were called to the Coodanup Foreshore Reserve to find Vivi engulfed in flames.

"This is heartbreaking for the artist and creator, Thomas Dambo, and for the tens of thousands of locals and visitors who had the honour of meeting Vivi and for the millions more that now won’t get the chance to discover her for themselves," Mayor Rhys Williams posted on his Facebook page.

"It is heartbreaking for the local people who volunteered many hours to help Thomas and his team build her and for the community groups and people at Form and the City of Mandurah who poured so much into making this amazing project come to life.

"It is awesome just how this creation, the Giants of Mandurah, has been able to capture the imagination and hearts of so many so quickly. You just need to look at the emotion expressed across our community today at this news - the hurt, the sadness and the defiance to know how quickly these Giants have become a treasured part of Mandurah’s story.

"She may have only been with us for a short time, but her presence was significant."

Mandurah Detectives and the Arson Squad are investigating.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Coodanup location where Vivi Cirklestone once stood will be closed until further notice, however the other four sculpture sites in Mandurah and the one in Subiaco remain open.

Visitors looking to discover the Giants of Mandurah can stop by the Mandurah Visitor Centre to collect the symbol that featured on Vivi’s necklace so they can complete the adventure and find the final hidden Giant.
