A 29-year-old man has fronted court, accused of raping a young girl inside her southern suburbs home.

Daniel Altieri allegedly broke into the house while the family were asleep on Saturday morning.

He then allegedly sexually assaulted the primary school aged girl.

Police say the girl's father performed a citizens arrest on Mr Altieri before police arrived.

"He was conveyed to hospital to ensure any medical attention was provided. He was released shortly after and deemed fit to be in police custody," Acting Assistant Commissioner Alan Morton said.

“As a senior police officer, as a member of the community and as the father of a young child myself, my thoughts are with the victim and the family.”

Mr Altieri has been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual penetration of a child under 13, attempted sexual penetration of a child under 13, three counts of aggravated indecent dealing of a child under 13, aggravated burglary and threaten to kill.

He did not apply for bail and will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court again on March 18.
