Dwellingup National Trails Centre now a reality

The Dwellingup National Adventure and Trails Centre project is now a reality thanks to a successful funding application under the Federal Government's Building Better Regions Fund.

The announcement of nearly $1.3 million in federal funding is a 50% contribution to match the Shire of Murray’s already allocated amount to transform the Dwellingup History & Visitor Information Centre into a National standard trails hub.

The project is part of the bigger overall plan that the Shire has put together to transform Dwellingup into a tourist town of national and international significance.

The building will be transformed into a visionary servicing centre with associated trails related amenities & infrastructure.

This includes upgraded toilets & showers, gift & bike shop, laundry, lockers, an operator and tours hub, RV vehicle dump point and significantly improved parking, signage and pathways infrastructure.

Shire President Maree Reid said that this was just the boots the Shire needs as it grapples with a sluggish economy and high unemployment.

“This building upgrade, the adjacent Adventure Park development and the future State Government trails upgrades will create 59 full-time equivalent jobs to our district”.

Apart from the Trails building redevelopment, the Shire has planned for a major skate-park, pump park, adventure playground, increased barbeque and playground equipment and is also planning to relocate the unused Hotham Valley turning platform and pedestrian rail bridge from Pinjarra to Dwellingup.

“We see rail tourism as a unique selling advantage to compliment the trails upgrade and adventure park”, Cr Reid said.

“Without the funding support from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund this exciting project may have taken years to complete.

"It is so exciting to say that it will now really happen”.

Member for Canning Andrew Hastie also announced on Friday, funding for the expansion of Quambie Park Waroona.

Mr Hastie said both of these projects are worthy recipients of BBRF funding that will service and strengthen our local communities and we’re all very excited to see these projects get up.

“Quambie Park provides vital aged care services and facilities to Waroona and the region.

"The almost $1.7 million expansion will provide additional beds for high needs care and increase capacity for assisted living through construction of the Waroona Housing Options Village.

"This will enable more for elderly people to live in their own homes, with access to the support they need, in a place connected to their community.

“This is a great result and evidence that the strong grassroots advocacy of the Peel region is being heard in Canberra,” Mr Hastie said.
