Western Australia’s first purpose-built trails centre is officially open and welcoming a keen influx of trails and adventure enthusiasts.
The $2.59 million Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre is the place to go before and after hitting the adventure town’s mountain bike, walk, paddle, railway, four-wheel drive and horse trails.
Opened on Thursday September 10, the Centre is equipped with bike wash area, hot showers and toilets, with a café, laundromat, trails retail and equipment hire and shuttle service to commence operation in the next few months following a recent expression of interest process.
Through the project, the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway is now a central feature of Dwellingup’s tourism offering, as a key component of the Trails Centre precinct.
A pump track, skate park and playground are also located in the precinct, which is within easy walking distance of the town’s main street.
Shire President Cr. David Bolt said the opening of the Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre is a major milestone for the town as it strives to achieve national and international trails town status.
“Murray is proud to be the first local government and tourism provider to deliver this key piece of infrastructure for Western Australian trail users,” Cr. Bolt said.
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie said the new Centre is an important part of a range of measures aimed at growing tourism in the local area.
“Tourism is pumping in Dwellingup thanks to the carefully thought out vision of the Shire of Murray and local community over the past four years. They have worked hard to build the region into a hub for adventure trails of world class standards," Mr Hastie said.
“We are now starting to see the fruit of their efforts – every weekend the town is full of people looking for a new adventure in our beautiful local environment.
“The Coalition Government committed $1.2 million to this project this back in 2017 and has since committed an additional $3.4 million to expand trails themselves. It’s exciting to see that investment leading to more tourists visiting and spending in our region."
The Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre is open Monday to Sunday 9:00am to 4:00pm (closed Christmas Day) and is located in Marinup Street Dwellingup.
