Collingwood President Eddie McGuire has announced he'll be stepping down immediately from his role with the club.

McGuire was scheduled to step down formally from his role at the end of 2021, deciding to vacate before the season starts under mounting pressure from some politicians and Indigenous leaders.

The calls comes after the clubs 'Do Better' report and investigation into racism.

At the press conference McGuire received a lot of criticism for calling it a 'proud day" for the football club.

The Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas has weighed in on McGuire's announcement, congratulating him on his career to date.

"The good always far far far outweighed the bad. An amazing career." he said.
