Macquarie Dictionary has unveiled the People's Choice Word of the Year for 2017 and the short list features newly minted words we've never seen before.

Hundreds of votes were cast earlier this month to determine the People's Choice Word of the Year for 2017 award.

'Framily' (noun, plural framilies) is a colloquial for a group of people who are not related by blood but who constitute an intimate network.

The Macquarie committee said framily is an interesting new sociological word, especially as our vocabulary has not always kept up with the changes we are now seeing to the conventional ideas of what constitutes a family.

"There is an element of kitschness to the coinage but we love it to pieces," the committee said in a statement.

The committee said 'milkshake duck' (noun) was its top pick for word of the year.

The word that started as an internet meme from Australian cartoonist Ben Ward is defined as a person who is initially viewed positively by the media but is then discovered to have something questionable about them which causes a sharp decline in their popularity.

In runner up position the public voted in 'Endling', a noun describing an individual that is the last of its species, its death resulting in the extinction of the species, as the last known thylacine, which was kept in Hobart Zoo until its death in 1936.

Also just missing out of top spot in 2017 was 'Text Neck', the neck and back pain associated with looking down at one’s phone while text messaging for long periods of time.

Unsurprisingly more online trends and memes took out top spots in category specific votes.

The recent poke trend scored the word Eating & Drinking top spot.

Poke is a trendy designer salad comprising diced raw fish, seasoned with a Japanese-style sauce of soy, green onions and sesame, usually served with a variety of vegetables, on a bed of rice.

In the world of Instagram staged-candid photos aren't something new, they've just now been given a name, 'plandid'.

Plandid is the Arts word of the year, it means a photo which appears to be a snapshot taken in an unguarded moment but which is actually carefully arranged.
