A relief teacher working at Waikiki's South Coast Baptist College was let go after revealing he was in a same sex relationship.
Craig Campbell who attended the school as a student was removed from the roster last month after a social media image caught the attention of students.
South Coast Baptist College principal Des Mitchell told The West Australian the school community’s foundational beliefs at that time had reflected only relationships involving a male and a female.
"The image he posted created interest in his personal life, including his sexuality.
"I shared with him that, at present, there is an inconsistency with his beliefs on sexuality and the college’s beliefs.”
"Mr Campbell had been loved and respected by both staff and students and, like the rest of the community, the school was on a “respectful journey of understanding” on this issue."
There are now renewed calls for the State Government to tighten the Equal Opportunities Act to stop private schools being able to fire homosexual teachers.
WA LGBTIQ rights campaigner Brian Greg told Macquarie Media that schools never ask the parents what they think and has cited a similar incident two years ago in Mandurah where a girl was asked to leave because she had two dads.
"The parents were outraged and said don't do this but the school held its ground and said no, this is what we're doing because the law allows us."
The State Government recently sought legal advice on whether religious exemptions that enable schools to discriminate against teachers or students based on their sexuality should be removed from WA’s Equal Opportunity Act.
