Government falls short on apprenticeship promise

The State Government promised 50 new apprenticeships would be available at Western Power, but fell short by 35 spots in 2017.

The McGowan Government has suffered more backlash after failing to put on the 50 new apprentices at Western Power.

A recent announcement from Western Power revealed the State-owned electricity business had engaged only 15 apprentices in 2017.

Premier Mark McGowan said the boost to apprenticeships was an important component of WA Labor's commitment to stop Colin Barnett's privatisation of Western Power.

"Our plan will ensure that, each year, at least 50 young Western Australians will be able to undertake their apprenticeships at a publically-owned Western Power," the now Premier said back in February last year.

Since 2012 the number of apprenticeships offered at Western Power has been in decline from 55 to 15 under the Liberal-National Government.

No apprentices were taken on in 2016.

Shadow Energy Minister Dean Nalder said Premier and Minister for Jobs Mark McGowan hadn't added any apprenticeships at Western Power in the 10 months he has been there.

“Mr McGowan gave an unequivocal promise on February 27 last year that his plan would ‘ensure that, each year, at least 50 young Western Australians will be able to undertake their apprenticeships at a publicly-owned Western Power’.

“I would have thought at least the Minister for Training would have ordered a mid-year intake to bring the numbers up to the election promise," he said.
