During the inaugural visit to the Peel Region, Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AC, Governor of Western Australia took in local attractions and met with community members.
As part of the Governor's Regional Visit Program, the Honourable Kerry Sanderson said she was looking forward to bringing good news home after seeing the potential for industry, jobs and growth in the Peel Region.
During her visit yesterday, Ms Sanderson was accompanied by Mayor Rhys Williams and other dignitaries for a cruise along our pristine waterways.
Ms Sanderson said she was optimistic about the future of Mandurah and its surrounding areas and impressed by what was already going on here.
"I'm terribly impressed, I always knew of the tourism potential and it was wonderful to go and see some of the business developments at the proposed business park, the food area and also some of the community aspects," she said.
"You've got Whitby Falls growing into a training area for the veterinarians studying at Murdoch University, you've got people working on aged care facilities and healing the community.
"What I was excited about was gaining a much broader knowledge of what's happening in Peel and it's very exciting."
Ms Sanderson also visited Fairbridge for a community morning tea where Her Excellency was treated to a welcome to country from Mr Harry Nannup and a performance from local Indigenous dance group Bindjareb Middars.
The day was capped off with a tour of Coodanup Community College and talks about anti-violence campaigns in the Peel Region.
Ms Sanderson was confident upcoming projects in the Peel Region would boost tourism, the local economy and attract more people to the area.
"Adding to the tourism potential you've got the community development, you've got the economic job generation and food, which I always find very exciting," she said.
"The opportunity to meet with residents from all corners of our State and hear about each area’s recent achievements and plans across industry, arts and culture, education, health and local government has been extremely valuable."
The Regional Visit Program is an opportunity for the Governor to engage with, and express appreciation to, community and local government representatives, residents, volunteers, schools, health professionals, local businesses and many other people and groups that make up the fabric of our rural communities.
