Extra CCTV cameras being installed in the Mandurah city centre to cover crime hot spots currently out of view will focus on Smart Street Mall.
The City of Mandurah is continuing its efforts in making the community safer thanks to a grant from the State Government for the Community Safety Mandurah project.
The City recently received $350,000 to install new CCTV cameras, upgrade existing cameras and the optic fibre network, and conduct a business engagement project.
The funding was made possible by the State Government’s CCTV Strategy Infrastructure Fund.
The Community Safety Mandurah project will allow the City to install additional CCTV cameras and other infrastructure in known crime hotspots.
Mayor Rhys Williams said the City of Mandurah has been committed to rolling out CCTV cameras as part of its community safety program since 2006.
"The new investment is about increasing exposure across the Smart Street Mall but also laying new technology to be able to make the whole system more effective.
"It's about covering the blind spots that are left within the existing network, especially around the Smart Street Mall.
"What we know about CCTV is that it's one element of creating a stronger and safer community.
"Going forward what we're really going to be looking at is how do we activate the city centre, how do we make a strong night economy that people want to part of and a city people want to connect to."
With the City working in partnership with WA Police, the project rollout is already well underway, and is expected to be completed in August 2018.
