A third lane will be built at a hot spot to ease congestion on the freeway.
National construction company BMD Constructions has won the bid to create a third lane on the Kwinana Freeway northbound with funding secured by the McGowan Government.
The $48.4 million contract will widen the northbound section of the freeway for an eight kilometre stretch from Russell Road to Roe Highway, an area where many motorists face heavy congestion daily.
In recent years there has been a significant growth in traffic volumes with an increase in congestion and flow breakdown on Kwinana Freeway south of Roe Highway.
Member for Baldivis Reece Whitby has welcomed the announcement.
"I have been raising this issue since before I was elected and I thank Transport Minister Rita Saffioti for responding positively and committing to this project," he said in an online post.
The project will include noise walls along the east side of the freeway in a bid to reduce noise to nearby homes.
Main Roads said over 75 per cent of crashes on this section of road are potentially dangerous rear-end collisions involving a higher than average proportion of heavy vehicles.
