A large-scale search is underway in Bunbury Regional Prison after suspected illicit drugs, syringes and needles were found stashed in a metal workshop.
Corrective Services Commissioner Tony Hassall described the find as "significant", after the search by local intelligence and staff.
“Substances have been found, they have been tested by the police and we are not sure what they are yet, some needles and some packages - so, some illicit contraband in the prison,” Hassall said to 6PR Mornings presenter Gareth Parker.
Mr Hassall said the prison had been put in lock down, with 50 additional staff on site to aid the ongoing search.
“We are speaking to a number of prisoners on site ... and it is all subject to an investigation,” he said.
“There was a locked bag containing needles and syringes. There were some needles in some foil, there was some brown liquid and some what we call “green vegetable matter” we don’t know what it is.”
Mr Hassall said drug detection dogs were assisting while the entire jail was being searched.
Prisoners involved could be possibly relocated to a different prison, receive a changed security classification and impose a ban on some visitors.
