Western Australians will get a chance to celebrate Christmas and New Year with a plate full of our states most iconic seafood - the western rock lobster.
This holiday season we can expect crays and lobster at festive gatherings, with an extra 12,500 lobsters hitting the local seafood market.
Mandurah is part of a new lobster-tagging initiative, The Local Lobster Program.
The program began last year in a nation first, and has been designed to put more local crays and lobsters on WA plates.
Local Lobster Program tags will be distributed to appropriately licensed commercial fishers by Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development offices at Mandurah, Fremantle, Hillarys, Lancelin, Jurien Bay and Geraldton.
The tags mean everyone will have the choice of fresh local lobster, with some commercial fishers selling their catch direct to the public, and others finding their way to plates through local restaurants and retailers.
Commercial fishers will be able to bag an extra 50 lobsters under the new program for direct sale to market.
More locals and tourists get a chance to try our State's iconic 'wild caught' western rock lobster, fresh from the waters of the Indian Ocean.
Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly said the main purpose of the program is to increase the supply of lobsters to WA communities and businesses.
"The Local Lobster Program provides a chance for more Western Australians and tourists to enjoy this popular seafood," he said.
