The seaside suburb of Madora Bay is a long way from Birmingham but it is where Richard and Lisa Smith are building their dream family home, thanks to a $431,000 Keystart home loan.

The Smiths, who emigrated from the United Kingdom in 2014, are Keystart's 100,000th customer.

They heard about Keystart from a friend with a Keystart loan and researched the scheme further through social media.

As first home owners, and because they were building a new home, the Smiths qualified for the State Government's First Home Owners Grant.

This boost, added to Keystart's requirement of only a two per cent deposit and no lender's mortgage insurance, meant the Smiths could save their deposit 12 months earlier than first planned.

Housing Minister Peter Tinley said it is fantastic to formally recognise Richard and Lisa Smith, and their children Liam and Aliyah, as Keystart's 100,000th customer.

"Housing development job creation is not just about builders, plumbers, tilers, electricians and carpenters like Richard, it also manifests in retail, with families like the Smiths buying furniture, curtains, carpets, washing machines and freezers for their new homes.

Member for Mandurah David Templeman this is an incredible milestone for Keystart which is the most successful scheme of its kind in Australia.

"Since 1989, Keystart has helped 100,000 low-to-middle income Western Australians into a home of their own, many of whom thought they'd never be able to afford it."

The Smiths expect to move into their new home by the end of the year.

"We are both in our thirties and have been keen to get into the property market and pay our mortgage off as soon as possible.

"Being able to save a deposit in record time was a real bonus for us and we're glad to finally leave the rental market and start paying off our own home."
