The 33-year-old Mandurah man will appear in court today on armed robbery charges.
Police have charged a man from Mandurah with one count of armed robbery in relation to an incident in Silver Sands.
Around 4.30pm on Tuesday the man entered the NewsXpress on Mandurah Terrace where he allegedly approached the counter demanding cash and cigarettes.
The man was wearing a divers mask covering his face and holding a bag.
A staff member asked the man to remove the mask and he allegedly removed a hammer from the bag and held it in a threatening manner.
Staff then ran from the store, escorting one customer in the store at the time.
Police said the man jumped over the counter and removed an amount of cash from the register as well as several packs of cigarettes before running from the store.
A number of people from a neighbouring store chased after the man and apprehended him, holding him until police arrived a short time later.
The man will front Mandurah Magistrates Court today.
