Man charged over Karnup copper theft

PIC: File

A 33-year-old man has been charged following an investigation into the theft of copper from Karnup.

Police were called to bushland near Paganoni Road on Friday, November 8 after $6000 in high voltage copper cable was reported stolen from the area the day before.

When officers arrived, they saw a grey Ford Territory leaving the area.

"Officers activated emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle, however; the driver failed to stop and a brief evade police incident ensued through several nearby streets," a WA Police spokesperson said.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop on Marillana Drive in Golden Bay.

It will be alleged; a search of the vehicle yielded numerous lengths of high voltage copper cabling along with hand tools consistent with being used to steal copper cabling.

A 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with a series of offences including stealing, failing to stop, reckless driving to escape pursuit and possessing dexamphetamine.

He is due to appear before the Mandurah Magistrates Court on December 3.
