Mandurah Mayor Marina Vergone says the City's CEO made a mistake and is looking to reinstate a citizenship ceremony ahead of the October council elections.
It follows criticism from the Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie who took to social media saying he's had a gutful of local governments politicising Australia Day and Citizenship ceremonies.
Mayor Marina Vergone said she was not consulted about the decision to cancel a citizenship ceremony because of council elections in October.
"I think the CEO (Mark Newman) was having a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that the campaign and elections are all underway for the Mayoral position and he wanted to make sure no one was getting an unfair advantage.
"I don't think he actually thought through the process that well.
"He has apologised and is looking to having the ceremony reinstated.
"It was just a silly mistake really."
