Mandurah will be the third and final site of the federal government's controversial drug-testing trial for welfare recipients.
Federal Social Services minister Christian Porter made the announcement on the Mandurah foreshore on Sunday morning.
From 1 January 2018, the two-year Drug Testing Trial across three locations will test a total of 5,000 new recipients of Newstart Allowance and Youth Allowance for illicit substances including ice, ecstasy and marijuana.
About 15 per cent of these - approximately 750 people - are expected to be tested in the Local Government Area of Mandurah.
Suburbs included in the trial are Bouvard, Clifton, Coodanup, Dawesville, Dudley Park, Erskine, Falcon, Greenfields, Halls Head, Herron, Lakelands, Madora Bay, Mandurah, Meadow Springs, Parklands, San Remo, Silver Sands, and Wannanup.
The Minister said the trial would benefit job seekers in Mandurah who have drug problems.
“This trial is focused entirely on helping job seekers overcome drug problems and to receive the help they need to get on a path towards securing a job and building a better future for themselves and their families,” the Minister said.
Member for Canning Andrew Hastie said he was excited to see this program trialled in Mandurah.
“We all know the devastating impact drugs have on individuals, families and communities.
"We need to try new things to help people overcome substance abuse so they can get clean and get a job.
"Employment provides individuals with the stability and self-worth they need to be healthy functioning members of their family and community.”
