The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre will be the venue for the funeral of Olympic champion Betty Cuthbert.
The original Aussie Golden Girl who took the 1956 Melbourne Olympics by storm will be farewelled next Wednesday, August 16 at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
City of Mandurah CEO Mark Newman said it's wonderful that Betty made Mandurah her home for the last 25 or more years and that she saw this was the place for her funeral.
"She was a private person who wasn't seeking a state funeral which was offered.
"I've met with people organising the funeral for what will be a big event.
"The people that have been calling to say they're coming next Wednesday to Mandurah is astronomical and out of this world and makes me understand what respect and esteem across the world she is held in."
The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre was chosen because it can seat up to 800 people and will have a big screen for the service which starts at 1pm.
"I hope the venue compliments what should be a wonderful ceremony," Mr Newman said.
Cuthbert was born in Sydney's western suburbs and moved to Mandurah in 1991.
