Mandurah local Zed Colback will be put through his paces on Channel Nine's Australian Ninja Warrior.

The Mandurah Rock Climbing manager is gearing up to take on the country's toughest obstacle course, on Ninja Island no less, in front of thousands of viewers this Sunday.

Zed Colback, who comes from a family of 13 children, all explorers and adventures, said his background in rock climbing has helped him prepare for the task.

"...climbing requires strength, coordination, technique and mental control. I trained like I would for climbing and added heaps of strength, speed and balance exercises," he said.

"Because you only get one shot at the course with no practice runs, the pressure was defiantly on. Even if I trained twice as much as I did, I don’t think it would have prepared me for what it was really like out on the course."

The 25-year-old is the coach for the Mandurah youth quad team, who compete in state and national competitions, he also runs climb clubs and ninja classes as well as conducting outdoor climbs and abseiling courses.

It's also a case of keeping it in the family for the new ninja, who said he was inspired by his brother-in-law 'Tradie Ninja' Sam Goodall, who made it to last year's grand final.

Zed said seeing his brother-in-law take part in season one of the show pushed him to apply for competition this year.

"I was hesitant about it [applying] but thought there is no reason I can’t give it a shot. I also realised that it would be a shame to pass by such an awesome opportunity," he said.

With a little encouragement from sister Rachel, Zed was signed up and ready to take on the course.

Once filming got underway Zed said he was shocked at the intensity of competition.

"I really didn’t know what to expect for the competition, but once I was there it all was very serious," he said.

"I wasn’t nearly as ready for how difficult and challenging the course really was. I also didn’t think it would be as fun as it looks, but it really is.

"I feel super honoured to have a shot at the competition. It’s a huge opportunity for anybody who gets to try the course. It was defiantly the best experience of my life."

Zed will debut on Channel Nine's Australian Ninja Warrior this Sunday at 7pm local time.
