Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Olympic Golden Girl Betty Cuthbert at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

Family and friends, past and present athletes, media personalities, members of parliament and City of Mandurah representatives gathered on Wednesday for the private funeral in Mandurah where she spent the last decades of her life.

Among the mourners were tennis champion Margaret Court, fellow runner Raelene Boyle, broadcaster Bruce McAveney and swimming legend Dawn Fraser.

Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates told the service Betty Cuthbert was the heroine of the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne and forever our golden girl."

Cuthbert was a four-time Olympic gold medallist, winning three at the 1956 Melbourne games in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay events, the only Olympian, male or female to have done so.

She went on to win the 400m in Tokyo eight years later.

Cuthbert’s nephew Peter Johnston told the service she conducted her post-athletic life with grace and dignity as she battled multiple sclerosis and kept her strong faith in God.

He also thanked Rhonda Gillam and her husband for their support in caring for Cuthbert.

"It was comforting to know she had another family and the last 25 years in Mandurah have been the happiest for her.

"Meeting the Gillam family and moving to Mandurah was always part of her life plan that was meant to be," Mr Johnston said.
