Funding has been secured to extend the South Yunderup Oval to accommodate growing community needs.

Last month the Shire of Murray was awarded $16,116 through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries’ Community Sport and Recreation Fund.

The money will go towards expanding the southern end of the oval while existing drainage and reticulation will be expanded, fencing realigned, surrounding swale drains modified and the surface of the oval will be improved.

Shire President Councillor David Bolt said the grant will be used to accommodate the community’s growing sporting needs, particularly in the soccer discipline.

“Works undertaken will reconfigure the oval to provide the rectangular shape required for a soccer pitch,” Cr. Bolt said.

“The Shire is committed to providing inviting recreational facilities which enable the growth, cultural enrichment, health and diversity of our district and its members.

“We are grateful to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Alcoa for sharing in and supporting this commitment,” Cr. Bolt said.

The project is further supported by Alcoa.

Works are anticipated to commence in February and conclude in May 2018.
