Eleven local governments have bound together to launch the GAPP campaign.

The city of Mandurah and Rockingham have joined eight other local governments to launch the Growth Areas Perth and Peel campaign.

The GAPP project will focus on the development of a special purpose fund to help expand and build major sporting facilities in the Peel Region and Perth’s growing outer metropolitan suburbs.

The City of Mandurah will join forces with Rockingham, Armadale, Canning, Cockburn, Gosnells, Kalamunda, Kwinana, Swan, Wanneroo and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale to lobby the Federal Government for $350m in funding.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the campaign came about after outer metropolitan councils identified a distinct lack of public open space, especially for sports facilities, in their communities.

“The vast majority of Perth’s population growth is occurring in outer metropolitan communities like the City of Rockingham,” he said.

“We live in one of the fastest growing cities in the south metropolitan corridor and in order to enhance the health and wellbeing of residents the City needed to pull together with our counterparts to make sure our message is loud and clear.

“The fund would give residents in the City of Rockingham the same access to high quality sporting facilities as those from Perth’s established communities.”

City of Rockingham has already moved to address issues surrounding a lack of sporting and recreation facilities with multimillion dollar investment in the likes of the Aqua Jetty, Lark Hill Sports Complex, Baldivis South Sports Pavilion, Golden Bay Sports Pavilion and the Singleton Sports and Community Centre.

Master planning is also underway by the City for stage one of the Baldivis District Sporting Complex.

“The complex will be designed for both junior and senior participants across a variety of summer and winter sports,” Mayor Sammels said.

“It will feature state of the art facilities that help meet a significant shortage currently facing sporting groups in Baldivis and the wider community.”
