The City of Rockingham will celebrate International Day of People with Disability with inclusion-focused activities.

The City of Rockingham is set to take part in the International Day of People with Disability with locally based inclusive activities at the Gary Holland Community Centre on Thursday.

The United Nations endorsed celebration aims to increase community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and to celebrate the contribution they make to the community.

The City has organised inclusive activities and entertainment to appeal to a range of ages and abilities, including a silent disco, fun photo booth, slot car racing, and participation in sports and craft activities.

Animal lovers can experience a reptile exhibition, interact with greyhounds and enjoy the opportunity to feed a pony with Riding for the Disabled.

Live entertainment will be a highlight of the event, with performances throughout the day from local schools and groups, including students from Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels said Celebrate Ability is an important event in the City’s calendar.

“Since its introduction, this event has had huge appeal to people with a disability and their families and carers as well for the wider community."

“One of the most rewarding aspects about the local Celebrate Ability event has been the way our young people, through the schools, have embraced the concept and play a key role in providing entertainment.

“Apart from being great fun for participants, this event focuses on inclusivity and helps to strengthen networks in our community.” He said.

The I Am You and You Are Me art exhibition will open at Rockingham Central Library tomorrow night, kicking off the celebrations.

A talk by traveller James Davies will also feature at Warnbro Library on Friday.

International Day of People with Disability is on December 3, this years theme is transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all.
