City of Rockingham residents are being encouraged to nominate a group or individual that has made the community a better place as part of the Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year Awards 2022.

The awards recognise organisations and people who have made an exemplary contribution to the community during the current year and/or those who have given notable service over a number of years.

They are presented on Australia Day at the City’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on January 26.

Four categories are available including Community Citizen of the Year, Young Community Citizen of the Year (under 25 years of age), Senior Community Citizen of the Year (over 65 years of age) and Active Citizenship – Group or Event.

In 2021 local resident Karin Gulliver, who has dedicated many years to helping boost literacy across the community through her work with the Read Write Now adult literacy program, was recognised as Community Citizen of the Year.

The Senior Community Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Allan Leslie West for his outstanding advocacy work in support of former defence force personnel.

The Active Citizenship (Group or Event) award was shared by the Rockingham Uniting Church Opportunity Shop and the Silver Chain Volunteer Fundraiser Group.

Both groups were recognised for the support they had provided to the community for more than 50 years.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels encouraged the community to nominate individuals and groups worthy of recognition.

“There are a number of residents and local organisations in our City who put in a significant amount of work to make our community a better place, and quite often this work is done with minimal recognition,” Mayor Barry Sammels said.

“People like this are the heartbeat of our community and the Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year Awards are an excellent chance to highlight these outstanding achievements.”

Nominations for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards 2022 close on Sunday 31 October 2021.
