The City of Rockingham has signed an oath in the lead up to White Ribbon Day on November 25 to send a message to the community that violence against women is not ok.
The City is supporting White Ribbon Day in 2017 with Councillors and Directors taking an oath on Monday to stand up, speak out and act to prevent men’s violence against women.
Mayor Barry Sammels has supported White Ribbon Day for the last three years.
“By signing this oath we are setting an example as community and organisational leaders.
“In Australia, the statistics are one in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence, perpetrated by someone known to them.
“Domestic violence is the principal cause of homelessness in women and children and two in five assaults reported to the Police in 2016 were related to family or domestic violence.
“We are sending the message to the community that violence is not ok and we as a City want to put an end to domestic and family violence.”
In addition to the Council and the Executive Team signing the oath, the City will promote and educate the community about White Ribbon Day with displays around the City from Monday 20 to Monday 27 November at the following locations:
• Centrelink
• City of Rockingham Administration Building
• City of Rockingham Libraries
• South Coastal Health
• Relationships Australia
• South Metro Regional Education Office.
Globally, White Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led movement to end men’s violence against women. Originating in Canada in 1991, White Ribbon is now active in more than 60 countries.
The campaign works through primary prevention initiatives involving awareness raising and education, and programs with youth, schools, workplaces and across the broader community.
The Campaign is also a means for men to speak out against violence against women, and to safely and effectively challenge the attitudes and behaviours of a minority of men who use or condone violence against women.
