Tunnel crash sends two people to hospital

PIC: Supplied

A car has been left wrecked after it slammed into a Main Roads truck in the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel.

Police are investigating a crash in the Northbridge tunnel that left a male and female in their 20s injured.

Just after midnight the driver of a white Mitsubishi Lancer was driving in the westbound lane of the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel before he lost control of the vehicle, slamming it into the left hand wall.

The driver and his passenger span out of control and narrowly missed the front of another vehicle in the centre lane before hitting the crash barrier of a Main Roads truck.

Emergency workers were in the tunnel several hundred metres from the entrance in the right hand west bound lane.

They were attempting to retrieve a duck that had entered the tunnel, as a result all lanes at the entrance to the tunnel indicated a 40 km/h speed zone and the emergency alert system was alerting drivers to the hazard ahead.

A Main Roads truck with a crash barrier in place was stationary in the right lane and a tow truck was in front of the truck.

The driver of the tow truck was in front of both stationary vehicles in the right hand roadway attempting to retrieve the duck.

The male driver and female passenger both in their 20s were taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police would like to speak to the driver of a two door silver Nissan Skyline, possibly a 370Z model or similar that was also travelling in the tunnel at the time of the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who saw the Mitsubishi Lancer or Nissan Skyline prior to the crash, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au
