Transit officers were filmed while escorting a man off a train at Mandurah station, after questioning his therapy dog.
A recent incident on the Mandurah train line has sparked debate surrounding companion animals on public transport.
Just before 1.30pm on Monday a man was kicked off a Transperth train at the Mandurah Station because officers believed the dog he was travelling with was a pet, not a therapy dog.
A passenger filmed the entire incident on their phone, which several news outlets have now obtained. In the footage the man explains a transit guard in Perth gave him the 'all clear' to travel with his four-legged friend.
Transit guards confronted the man, who repeatedly claimed the dog was to help with a medical condition.
The man reportedly produced a letter on his phone to prove the dog was a companion and not a pet, after being escorted from the train.
In a statement, Transperth defended the actions of the guards, and reiterated the public transport policy for travelling with animals.
"To obtain approval, animals must undergo assessment by a vet to ensure the dog is healthy, has been appropriately trained and its behaviour reaches the minimum standard to be deemed safe and effective in public spaces," the statement said.
"This system has been in place for many years and is done to ensure the safety of the animal’s handler, the animal itself and the public around it.
"He was not carrying valid photo ID of the dog or a vision impairment pass, nor was the animal wearing a suitably marked coat or harness to identify it.
"When the man became abusive toward staff he was eventually removed from the service. He was given a verbal caution for disorderly behaviour and refusing to leave."
The Public Transport Authority said it had not received a complaint from the man. Officers issued the man a verbal caution for disorderly behaviour.
