More than 130 volunteer and career firefighters, and Department of Fire and Emergency Services staff are being recognised this month for their contribution during the 2016 Waroona bushfire.

Twenty-one individuals, brigades, units and strike teams have received the Department of Fire and Emergency Services' highest award - a Certificate of Commendation.

Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan said the recipients each performed a significant act of bravery during what were often perilous situations.

"Everyone receiving a Meritorious Service Award for their role in the 2016 Waroona fire should be proud of their outstanding efforts," Minister Logan said.

"The recipients carried out their duties to the highest degree, showing great dedication and bravery in the face of unimaginable conditions and immense challenges.

"More than three years have passed, but their efforts are still in the minds of the people who worked alongside them, and the individuals they helped protect."

Among those to receive Certificates of Commendation were the Yarloop Bush Fire Brigade, Waroona Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services unit and Cookernup Bush Fire Brigade.

A further 109 Certificates of Distinction, the second highest DFES award, have been awarded to volunteers and DFES career staff across the State for their outstanding actions.

Recipients were nominated by their peers, and have been presented with their Meritorious Service Awards at regionally based ceremonies throughout August.

Anyone wanting to nominate an individual, brigade, group or unit for their service during the Waroona fire or any other past incident, should contact rewards@dfes.wa.gov.au.
