A man has been arrested after he allegedly destroyed a speed camera after it caught him speeding.

The camera was set up on Stirling Highway near Boundary Road in Mosman Park on Wednesday night when at around 7.40pm it flashed the man's Ford Focus hatchback.

The man then allegedly drove back to where the camera was located, picked it up and smashed it into a tree several times.

The camera's lenses and finely calibrated speed measuring apparatus were destroyed, leaving a damage bill of $70,000.

Police arrested the man three hours later at his Mosman Park home.

He has been charged with Criminal Damage or Destruction of Property and is due to appear before the Fremantle Magistrates Court on December 7.
