Stage one of the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation will reach a new milestone today, with works to begin at the intersection of Rockingham Beach Road, Railway Terrace and Harrison Street.

The works will see the construction of a raised intersection that will signal to motorists they are entering a pedestrian friendly zone.

During this phase of the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation temporary traffic lights will be installed at the intersection, with traffic to be limited to one direction at a time.

The parking bays on the north side of Harrison Street will be unusable while the parking bays on Rockingham Beach Road immediately adjacent to the intersection will also be unavailable, on both sides of the street.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the new phase of works were necessary to help the intersection link up with a reconfigured Railway Terrace and Beach Plaza.

“Once complete the construction of a raised intersection will assist both motorists and pedestrians alike,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Not only will it signal to motorists that they are entering a pedestrian friendly zone it will also boost accessibility for pedestrians with the intersection, footpaths and the Beach Plaza all on the same level."

While work occurs at the intersection parking remains available on Val Street, behind the shops on both sides of Kent Street (between Gary Holland Centre and Railway Terrace), and behind the museum.

The temporary traffic lights at this intersection will last until 7 December 2018.

Mayor Sammels encouraged the community to continue visiting the foreshore precinct, with businesses remaining open throughout construction.

“While there is a lot of work happening during the revitalisation our local businesses remain open, so we encourage residents to continue visiting the foreshore precinct as they always have done,” Mayor Sammels said.

“Pedestrian access has been maintained around the foreshore and there is also parking available a short walk from restaurants and shops.”

Stage one of the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation began on 30 July, after the City signed a construction agreement with Civil Engineering contractor Ertech.

The first stage of the project comprises three key areas, Railway Terrace, the Beach Plaza and The Boardwalk. It is expected to be completed by September 2019.
