Students from Makybe Rise Primary School in Baldivis and Rockingham Montessori School have taken the concept of street art to a whole new level as winners of the Act-Belong-Commit Schools Take pART competition.
The Schools Take pART competition, which is sponsored by the City of Rockingham and Healthway, encourages young people to express themselves artistically and culturally through the use of street art in selected spaces.
In 2019 walls outside Rockingham Centre and Venrock Finance were chosen as the artistic sites, with local artists Samantha Prentice and Jacq Chorlton helping the students bring their designs to life.
This year the theme for the competition was “Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe.” It encouraged the students to design visual interpretations of positive mental health, which focused clearly on the Act Belong Commit message.
The work completed by Year 6 students from Makybe Rise PS is featured at Rockingham Centre while a mixture of Year 7, 8 and 10 students from Rockingham Montessori School have had their artwork featured at Venrock Finance on Goddard Street.
City of Rockingham Deputy Mayor Deb Hamblin congratulated the winning schools for their outstanding artistic efforts.
“The Schools Take pART project has the potential to change the way we think about urban art and at the same time provide young people with an opportunity to express themselves,” Deputy Mayor Hamblin said.
“The work you will see at Rockingham Centre and Venrock Finance is a great example of the talents our local young artists have. Art like this can completely transform an otherwise plain public space and I congratulate all of the students involved for creating something that will leave a positive lasting impression on the community.”
