The Peel Region prepare for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee week.
The City of Rockingham got a head start on NAIDOC Week, hosting a Rockingham NAIDOC Celebration at the Gary Holland Community Centre yesterday.
Official NAIDOC Week celebrations start next Sunday on July 8 and run till the 15th.
This year's theme is 'Because of Her, We Can' with a focus on the role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women play in the community.
City of Rockingham is set to host a number of free community events with all community members invited to get involved.
“NAIDOC Week is a chance for all of us to come together as a community to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said.
“The theme for 2018 is Because of Her, We Can and this year we pay particular attention to the vital role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played, and continue to play, in families, communities and organisations.
“Over the coming weeks there will be something for everyone to get involved in, from art workshops to film screenings and a cultural journey with inspiring Wongathu/Yamatji woman Gningala Yarran-Mark.”
In Mandurah the Bindajreb NAIDOC committee will host a community event on Monday July 9.
The celebration will include a community walk at the Eastern Foreshore, flag raising ceremony at Manjar Square and the Bindjareb Art Award to be announced at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
The 2018 Binjared NAIDOC ball is will also be held on Saturday July 14 at Bendigo Bank Stadium with all residents invited to attend.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July.
