The City of Rockingham will support the United Nations’ International Day of People with Disability by hosting the Celebrate Ability.

With the event to be held on Thursday, November 29, residents are encouraged to join the City in recognising and celebrating International Day of People with Disability.

From 10.30am -1.30pm at the Gary Holland Community Centre, the Celebrate Ability event is inclusive, with an aim to increase community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the contribution people with disability make to the community.

A range of activities including a silent disco, fun photo-booth and slot car races will be available as well as collaborative art experiences and the opportunity to interact with a pony from Peel Riding for the Disabled.

Live entertainment from local schools, community groups and special guest dance group Tracksuit will also feature at the event.

Representatives from Special Olympics WA will also be present, providing sporting demonstrations and promotion of the Special Olympics WA State Games, which will be held in Rockingham in October 2019.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said this year’s celebration would be the eighth annual event the City had hosted to acknowledge International Day of People with Disability.

“Celebrate Ability is a fantastic event that gives us the opportunity to recognise the wonderful contribution people with disability make to our community,” he said.

“The City aspires to create a community that is inclusive and welcoming to people with disability, their families and carers. Events like Celebrate Ability are pivotal to achieving that goal and it’s fantastic to see the event continue to grow each year.”

Celebrate Ability is a free event that is open to all residents. Auslan interpreters will be available on the day.
