Presley Bennell fronted the Mandurah Magistrates Court for the first time on Tuesday after being charged with two counts of animal cruelty.
The 22-year-old is accused of torturing kangaroos on suburban streets in the southern Mandurah suburb in January and February this year.
At times he allegedly encouraged a dog to maul them.
Bennell chose not to speak following his court appearance and instead covered his face with a shirt.
Wildlife protestors were chanting "justice for wildlife" as he left the building.
His case was adjourned for five weeks.
Bennell's bail conditions mean he is not allowed to enter the suburb of Dawesville or be in control of a canine.
The Greenfields man will appear in court again on June 30.
