Labor's newly announced candidate for Secret Harbour Georgia Tree has vowed to fight for the people in the southern suburbs electorate.

The 34-year-old was unveiled as Labor's candidate for the Secret Harbour by-election following the retirement of long-serving MP Paul Papalia.

Tree joined the Labor party in 2013 and worked for Federal MP Madelaine King for nine years before becoming a Government Relations Officer for Woodside.

Ms Tree grew up in Warnbro in a single-income family and was raised by her father after her mother died of cancer when she was just nine.

“I’ve been a fighter my whole life, I had to grow up really quickly losing my mum at a young age, and it’s absolutely put the fire in my belly to make sure that I’m fighting for people, so they have a better opportunity than I had when I was growing up,” she said.

Ms Tree attended Warnbro Community High School before going on to study creative writing and international relations and national security at Curtin University.

"I’m putting up my hand because Labor built the Mandurah line. I couldn’t have got to uni without it, and now Labor is capping transport fares at $2.80 no matter where you live,” she said.

“Labor built Medicare – my mom’s chemo would have bankrupted our family without it – and now Labor’s building a brand-new hospital in Mandurah."

In 2020, Ms Tree wrote a book called "Old Boy" about her father's life as a heroin addict and drug dealer.

Premier Roger Cook said Ms Tree was was the sole candidate to make it through the preselection expression of interest process.

"People understand that Georgia Tree is someone who can effectively represent this community and deliver in the same way that WA Labor is delivering ... that’s what people want,” he said.

One Nations, the Liberals and the Greens are expected to announce their candidates for the Secret Harbour by-election next week.
